North India Itinerary for 7, 10 and 14 Days: Routes That Leave Time to Explore
A good North India itinerary makes the journey between places part of the plan. Adding more destinations does not always add more holiday value. These three suggested routes begin and end in Delhi, with clear overnight bases and enough flexibility to adapt for your arrival time, interests and travel season.

Quick answer
With seven days, focus on Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. With ten days, add a carefully paced Haridwar–Rishikesh stay. With fourteen days, choose a broader Rajasthan circuit rather than combining distant deserts and high mountains. Count international arrival and departure days, and check the Taj Mahal’s Friday closure before fixing the sequence.
Choose a route before choosing hotels
Decide whether your priority is heritage, spiritual experiences or mountains. The sample routes below emphasise heritage and, in the ten-day version, the foothills. They are editorial route suggestions rather than fixed packages. If Manali is your main goal, replace a region with a valley-based holiday instead of adding a long detour to every other stop.
Write down flight dates and times first. A late arrival is not a full Delhi sightseeing day, and an early departure removes the last day from the itinerary. For overseas travellers, our international traveller planning page provides a useful starting point. Avoid long-distance transfers immediately before a flight without an appropriate buffer.
Seven days: a relaxed Golden Triangle
| Day | Suggested plan | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Delhi; recover and take a short local outing if suitable | Delhi |
| 2 | Selected Delhi heritage visits | Delhi |
| 3 | Transfer to Agra; Agra Fort if time allows | Agra |
| 4 | Taj Mahal visit on a non-Friday; onward travel to Jaipur | Jaipur |
| 5 | Amer and selected nearby sightseeing | Jaipur |
| 6 | Old-city area, museums or markets at your pace | Jaipur |
| 7 | Return to Delhi with a margin for onward travel | Delhi or departure |
This route uses two Delhi nights, one Agra night and three Jaipur nights before the final return. Add a Delhi night if your flight schedule needs it. Friday affects the Agra sequence: adjust the city order or the Taj Mahal day before booking non-refundable rooms. See our Golden Triangle tour page for route discussions.
Keep optional stops flexible on the Agra–Jaipur transfer. If you include Fatehpur Sikri, allow for the visit and check access arrangements. It should not create a late arrival followed by an overpacked sightseeing morning. Choose a few experiences you care about and leave space to enjoy them.
Ten days: heritage plus the Ganges foothills
| Day | Suggested plan | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Arrival and selected Delhi sightseeing | Delhi |
| 3 | Travel to Agra and visit Agra Fort if suitable | Agra |
| 4 | Taj Mahal on an open day; continue to Jaipur | Jaipur |
| 5–6 | Jaipur sightseeing at a manageable pace | Jaipur |
| 7 | Return to Delhi; rest before the next region | Delhi |
| 8 | Transfer towards Haridwar or Rishikesh | Rishikesh or Haridwar |
| 9 | One local programme: river, aarti, yoga or confirmed activity | Same base |
| 10 | Return to Delhi; allow for departure arrangements | Delhi or departure |
The Delhi break separates the heritage circuit from the foothill transfer. This reduces pressure to make a very long cross-region journey and then start sightseeing. Choose one foothill base. If you sleep in Rishikesh and visit Haridwar, include the local return travel in the day rather than counting them as neighbouring stops with no transfer cost.
Rafting is optional and subject to operator conditions, participant suitability and availability. It should not be treated as a guaranteed inclusion. For a quieter trip, use the local day for a guided walk, yoga or riverside time. Read our Rishikesh travel guide before choosing the hotel location.
Fourteen days: Delhi, Agra and a broader Rajasthan circuit
| Day | Suggested plan | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Arrive and explore selected Delhi sights | Delhi |
| 3–4 | Agra Fort and Taj Mahal on an open day | Agra |
| 5 | Transfer to Jaipur with only selected optional stops | Jaipur |
| 6–7 | Jaipur forts, old city and flexible time | Jaipur |
| 8 | Travel to Jodhpur | Jodhpur |
| 9 | Jodhpur heritage visits and a slower evening | Jodhpur |
| 10 | Transfer to Udaipur | Udaipur |
| 11–12 | Udaipur palace area, lakeside time and optional outings | Udaipur |
| 13 | Return to Delhi by a confirmed flight or rail option | Delhi |
| 14 | Buffer time and departure | Departure |
This version uses a confirmed rail or flight option for the Udaipur–Delhi return. Price that service separately and check the baggage and schedule conditions. If you prefer an entirely road-based holiday, discuss a different return structure and the extra transfer time. Do not hide a long return drive inside the final departure day.
Choose Jaisalmer instead of Udaipur if the desert is your main interest, then redesign the end of the trip. Adding both to this route can reduce the relaxed pace. Our Rajasthan destination guide helps you compare the cities. Rajasthan Tourism’s suggested itineraries are also useful for regional planning.
Adjust for children, parents and different interests
For family travel, limit hotel changes and protect a rest period after longer drives. Choose rooms and properties for access, meal options and comfortable downtime. A packed city list can be less enjoyable than one well-planned heritage outing followed by a slower afternoon. Ask everyone to choose one must-do experience before finalising the route.
If mountains matter more than forts, give them their own block of days. Check the season and road access, and keep a local alternative to higher excursions. If spiritual travel is the priority, reduce a city stay and extend the foothill base. A route should reflect your interests, not simply cover the largest number of names.
Budget, transport and booking sequence
Build one route sheet with dates, overnight stops, people and bags. Request transport against that route, then price the rooming list and any scheduled flights or trains. Add meals, monument tickets and separately chosen activities. This makes it easier to compare complete totals and identify which changes affect cost.
Before payment, confirm vehicle type, luggage storage, local sightseeing coverage, driver allowance, tolls, parking and applicable taxes. Clarify pickup and final drop locations. Our car hire with a driver and group vehicle options can be compared using the same route sheet.
Finally, check attraction closures and cancellation deadlines before fixing non-refundable services. Keep the last night near the departure city when your schedule requires it. This buffer does not guarantee every connection, but it prevents an avoidable long transfer from competing with your flight check-in.

Is seven days enough for North India?
It is enough for a focused route such as Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. It is not enough to explore every major region at a comfortable pace.
Can I add Manali to the seven-day Golden Triangle?
That adds substantial travel. Choose a mountain-focused route or extend the holiday rather than attaching it as a quick stop.
Which itinerary suits first-time visitors?
The seven-day Golden Triangle is a useful heritage starting point. Choose the longer versions if their additional regions match your interests.
Why is Friday important?
The Taj Mahal is closed for general viewing on Fridays. Adjust the Agra visit before confirming hotel dates.
Are these ready-made package prices?
No. They are sample routes. A booking quotation must confirm dates, hotels, transport, activities and all inclusions.
