Delhi to Amritsar Road Trip: Route & 2-Day Itinerary

A Delhi to Amritsar road trip is one of the easier long-distance journeys from the capital because most of the route follows major highways across the plains. The main planning challenge is not mountain terrain but traffic around Delhi, busy city entries and fitting Amritsar’s important sites into a respectful schedule.

Two nights is more comfortable than a rushed overnight visit. This plan keeps the Golden Temple experience separate from the drive and leaves room for Jallianwala Bagh, the old-city area and the border ceremony subject to current access.

Route, distance and travel time

Best stops between Delhi and Amritsar

Plan the first breakfast stop after crossing the NCR. Karnal and the Ambala corridor have established facilities. A second break near Ludhiana or Jalandhar helps the driver stay fresh. Avoid turning roadside eating into multiple long stops, or the evening Amritsar entry can become tiring.

Suggested itinerary

Day 1: Delhi to Amritsar and evening visit

Leave Delhi early and check in by afternoon. After rest, visit the Golden Temple complex in the evening if the group is comfortable. Cover your head, remove footwear in the designated area, dress modestly and follow instructions for queues and photography.

Day 2: Heritage area and border excursion

Begin early at the Golden Temple if you want a quieter second visit, then walk to Jallianwala Bagh and explore the nearby heritage streets. For the Attari–Wagah border ceremony, verify the current schedule, entry rules and reporting time before leaving the city. Keep valid identification and allow for security checks.

Day 3: Return to Delhi

Have breakfast, check out and start before late-morning city traffic. Schedule driver breaks around Jalandhar/Ludhiana and Karnal.

When to visit Amritsar

  • October to March: generally the most comfortable period for walking and sightseeing.
  • April to June: hot afternoons; plan early and evening visits.
  • July to September: humid with monsoon rain, so carry light rain protection.
  • Festival periods: meaningful but crowded; reserve hotels and transport early.

Food and local etiquette

Amritsar is known for Punjabi dishes, but a good itinerary should not pressure the group to try too many heavy meals in one day. At the community kitchen, follow the seating and service system respectfully and avoid wasting food. Drink safe water and keep allergies or dietary restrictions clear when ordering.

Vehicle planning for a group

A car is convenient for a family, while a Tempo Traveller hire in Delhi works well for larger families and school or corporate groups. For high-capacity travel, compare the route and city parking needs before choosing a bus on rent in North India. Always include driver rest in the schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough for Amritsar?

Two sightseeing days cover the major city highlights at a sensible pace. With road travel from Delhi, two nights is preferable.

Can the Golden Temple be visited at night?

The complex has long visiting hours, but access and ceremony timings can change. Confirm locally and choose a time that suits children and older travellers.

Do travellers need ID for the border ceremony?

Carry valid government photo identification and check current security requirements before departure. Do not rely on an old schedule or entry post.
